Well, this started out as a coloring book page I was painting for the Avalanche blog, and one thing led to another... Anyway, something about the image just said "Drink Coke!" I attempted to rip off the color and style of some old illustrators- I specifically tried to imitate Gil Elvgren's colors. I'm sure he'd be overjoyed.

Also, I have to thank Ryan Wood for showing me some great techniques in Painter! Sam, I wish I'd have listened sooner. This image was MUCH faster than images I painted in Photoshop.

John Wayne patch

Yer dang strait! WWJWD? There's a story behind this image. A couple months ago, a SPC Ryan "John Wayne" Rowley, a US soldier deployed in Afghanistan, contacted me. I'd drawn a caricature of John Wayne, and he wanted to use the image for a patch on his body armor! That was pretty cool, and I told him he could definitely do that. This morning I got this one in the mail. It's so awesome! The patch designers did a great job! There are only three of these patches in existence. I have this one, and Ryan has already worn his in combat. Thanks, Ryan, and good luck to all our troops!

Check it out! I made that guy's costume! Designed, modeled, textured, and rigged it. This screenshot was posted on a European game review site, and it's from Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. That's the game I worked on at SOE, and they used my art for a news article! Awesome! Makes me feel kinda good about my self.

Also, the male and female versions of the armor use exactly the same texture.

Darkseid is one bad dude. He can shoot death rays from his eyes that go around corners. Jim Lee (DC Comics) drew this for me while I was at SOE. Cool, eh? Jim is one of the art directors for DC Universe Online (which I did not work on, but looks way rad). He came to a company party and drew pictures for everybody! He was whipping out all sorts of stuff just from his head in about one minute. Media: Sharpie on Superman Poster.

Well, it may appear from the looks of my blog that I have been doing nothing all summer. This is, of course, entirely untrue! I have been working at Sony Online as an art intern. I'm not sure what I'm allowed to post about that, but I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that I have been doing things ranging from bug fixing, to concept costume design, to modeling and texturing. It's been tons of fun. At some point, I may be able to post some of the stuff I did... I have to get permission though, etc., etc. By the way, whatever I say here is not the view of Sony Online Entertainment, and I do not speak in their behalf, and anything I say here is unreliable at best... That's so I don't get fired. It's been a lot of fun, the team was great, I learned a lot, and should have some of my stuff show up in game. Unfortunately, I haven't done much art outside work, except some figure drawing, because I've been spending the rest of my time surfing! Thanks, Carson! Tell me you wouldn't do the same, anyway. I think I worry a lot about career possibilities, what to do with my life, etc. I'm sure it's all very important. And then, I just read/watched some videos from this site about uncontacted tribes living in South America. That is, these, people are living just like ancient people in the jungle with no idea that we are out there. When we show up, it would probably be, in there eyes, something close to War of the Worlds (the one with Tom Cruise).

By the way, I did not paint the above picture. Sorry to dissapoint.

OK, I'm somewhat happy with this, but I'll have to finish it tomorrow. This has been the hardest one yet because of the combination of diffuse light, weird color scheme, and a smooth female face (she's had all her wrinkles removed). Please give me any useful advice about this! I really don't want it to look like 80's airbrush again...
Also, I'm going to San Diego on Monday! Hooray! Also, I bought a bunch of pirate toys! Hooray again!

Who doesn't love Will Smith? He's like a happy go lucky everyman character. He makes everyone happy like Tom Cruise. Or at least, that's what I read online.
This one definitely still needs a lot of work, but I've been on it all day, and it's time to go home. This one has been the hardest so far, maybe because I'm trying to make it more accurate, but it seems like the coloring has been hard, too. But then, my reference pic has really flat lighting. Excuse. Etc. Just the same, I'm happy with my progress here!

Odd Skull Design

(This painting is not finished yet.) Anyway, my purpose here was to do a 2-D graphic skull design with a very goofy look to it, and then figure out what the actual anatomy would look like. Of course, it leaves us with a very crooked jawed, assymetrical head that you really wouldn't want to see with flesh on it. But it was fun anyway, and I will finish it shortly.

Tools were: ArtRage 2.5 and Photoshop CS3.

I've switched gears again. I actually intend to paint this one as well, using a different approach. By the way, the story behind this is (not finished) as follows: It was prophesied that this girl's father would save his people from a terrible evil. Well, the terrible evil came, and he went to face it. He was killed. Now, she is holding his sword, trying to figure out what to do and what went wrong. She doesn't know that she will be the one saving the people... Indirectly, it will still be fulfilled.

So, here's my latest progress in painting. This is a space dude. He's a bit peeved right now cause somebody stuck a piece of bubble gum in his rifle chamber. He's got to finish cleaning his space gun before he can go put the hurt on somebody. OK, I had a more profound story worked out at first, but then I canned it in favor of just being goofy. Hopefully you can tell that I'm trying to emulate the avalanche painting style. After talking to Todd Harris, I've been trying to copy some of his and Ryan Wood's work, just to learn some skills. This guy is my own design, though.

So, this one turned out... almost exactly the same as the one before it. Geez. Well, I feel like I fixed some of the afore mentioned focus issues, and it looks much more solidly sitting on an actual ground. Also, the colors are cleaner and more saturated. Comments welcome!

Armadillo Environments

I am working with Abby Ash to design the gas station, which is the central location for a our senior film. I had been drawing them with flat roofs and Abby had been giving them A frames. My new favorite is a combination of the two- half flat, half pointy. As for materials (and shape), we're going for a stucco look. I found the flippin coolest abandoned stucco gas station online... That's where I got the buttresses! We'll go over these in the morning. Also, I need to stop blogging after midnight.

So, I started to paint this Clint caricature in black and white with the idea of colorizing it like the videos on Ryan Wood's and Mark Behm's blog (nice work, gentleman). I think I went too far with the values though, and it's being un-easy to color... I'll come back to it shortly, as right now I'm going to sleep.

More Armadillo Designs

So, we ended up going with a more anthropomorphosized design. Chris Welch did the lovely girl dillo (I tweaked this particular image a bit), and the guy was my attempt at her boyfriend. We may end up using a design close to this one! Cool! Anyway, my goal was to make her look even more feminine and cute by contrast with a goofy looking but masculine counterpart. I also wanted him to seem affectionate and likeable.

Just for fun, here are some very badly photoshopped together concept sketches for armadillo characters! None of these got used, but it was really fun to create them. The whole pointy face idea was vetoed pretty quick. Too bad, it looks so armadillo-y (although I know it would look really weird in 3d). My favorites were the ones wearing clothes and the one that looks like an upside down taco.

I found a great book by Don Seegmiller about digital character painting in photoshop. The black haired fellow is the result of one of Don's tutorials. It's not my design, but I am proud of it... The top painting is Bruce Willis. He can blow up an airborne helicopter with an SUV. It's also my own design! I'm getting better, I think!

So, I'm trying to teach myself to paint a bit. I used a photo of one of my favorite super villains as reference, and I didn't trace/paint over it or colorpick! Hoorah! Of course, now I have some basic color splats down, and I don't really know how to progres further... Anybody want to give me a hint? Or flat out teach me to paint? My tools are Corel Painter and a tiny wacom pad (though for some reason, I don't think pressure is working...)

Armadillo Design

These armadillo designs were based on one Shay did, which I happened to like a lot. We just needed it to be more teenager looking and have a more functional mouth. I attempted to work that out here. I also messed with colors a bit. Now it's My little Armadillo!

Of course, we decided to go a completely different direction. Too bad.
